it definitely looks better when taken by a professional photographer. and it helps that the photographer is my sister-in-law. check out her photography blog here.
i made this for my daughter's 5th birthday. in place of the "B" i can do a full name, an arrow pointing up, or "me". i can also change the number of candles on the cake.
